Texas Grass Fed Beef
Texas Grass Fed Farms was founded by Troy and Carrie Patterson in McKinney, Texas. They're not ranchers. They're parents who spent years researching clean food sourcing, grew frustrated trying to verify what was actually in the beef their family was eating, and built a direct relationship with vetted Texas regenerative ranchers so other Texas families wouldn't have to figure it out on their own. Every rancher they work with shares their standards: no antibiotics, no added hormones, never grain-finished, pastures free of glyphosate.
Why Most Texas Beef Isn't Actually Grass Fed
Texas runs roughly 4 million head of beef cattle, more than any state in America. Almost none of that beef is grass finished. Here's how the conventional system works.
A cow-calf operation raises calves that nurse and graze alongside the herd until weaning at 6 to 10 months of age. The weaned calves get sold to a stocker operation, where they graze grass and forage locally for another 3 to 6 months. Then they're trucked to a feedlot and finished on grain, subtherapeutic antibiotics, and added hormones for 4 to 6 months before slaughter at 18 to 22 months old.
That's not grassfed beef. That's grain-finished beef with a grassy start. True grass finished beef means the animal grazes outdoors on pasture its entire life, until it gets processed.
What Makes Texas Raised Grassfed Beef Different
Texas has natural advantages for producing premium, pasture raised grass-fed beef. A 9 to 10 month forage growing season means cattle graze year round across most of the state, with seasonal variety in the pasture mix. The diverse ecosystems, from East Texas piney woods to the Hill Country to the High Plains, give herds access to varied, nutrient-rich forage.
Raising certified grass-fed and finished beef is a real commitment. Instead of selling a 500-pound calf within the first year, a grass-fed rancher waits 24 to 30+ months to recover the investment. That's why this practice stays rare. Most of what's out there comes from small operations selling half or whole shares on Facebook groups, which isn't convenient for most families trying to fill a freezer.
That's the gap we fill.
How to Purchase Grass Fed Beef in Texas
Most Texans have three options.
Grocery Store Grass-Fed Beef
Whole Foods, Central Market, and H-E-B all carry certified grass-fed products. USDA rules do require verification for the label, so that part is legitimate. What the label doesn't always tell a customer is whether the animals were raised free from hormones and antibiotics, or whether the pastures are free of chemical inputs like glyphosate. Every operation has different standards and transparency varies.
Direct From a Local Rancher
Buying a quarter, half, or whole side direct from a local Texas ranch can be a great deal on quality meat. The downside: you're spending thousands on hundreds of pounds at once, you wait for the animal to be finished, you schedule time with a processor (often in a far-off county), then you pick it up and split it. It's not how most families want to shop.

Texas Grass-Fed Beef FAQ
Is H-E-B grass-fed beef actually grass-fed?
H-E-B's certified grass-fed products meet USDA labeling standards for grass-fed and grass-finished beef. What the label doesn't guarantee is where the cattle were raised. Grass-fed beef in US grocery stores can come from US ranches or be imported from Australia, New Zealand, or South America depending on the specific SKU. Always check for "Product of USA" on the label. Texas Grass Fed Farms is specific on all of it: 100% grass-fed and finished, no antibiotics, no added hormones, no glyphosate applied to pastures, born and raised in Texas.
Where does most grass-fed beef sold in US grocery stores actually come from?
A significant portion of the grass-fed beef on US grocery shelves is imported from Australia, New Zealand, Uruguay, or Brazil. The "grass-fed" label tells you how the cattle were raised, not where. As of January 1, 2026, the USDA updated the "Product of USA" label to require that beef be born, raised, and processed in the United States. Every cut from Texas Grass Fed Farms meets that standard, and buying it directly supports the Texas regenerative ranchers we partner with.
What is the difference between grass-fed and grain-finished beef?
Grain-finished cattle spend the last 4 to 6 months of their lives in a feedlot eating grain, not pasture. Grass-fed and finished cattle eat grass and forage their entire lives. The result: leaner, healthier meat with 2-4x more omega-3 fatty acids, higher CLA, and more beta-carotene. See the full nutrition breakdown.
Can I buy a whole cow, half beef, or quarter beef in Texas?
We sell in individual cuts and family bundles. Buy all you want.
How is grass fed beef shipped from Texas Grass Fed Farms?
Every order leaves our cold logistics partner frozen solid, insulated and packed with dry ice. Texas orders arrive in 1 to 2 business days. Nationwide orders arrive in 1 to 3 business days.
Why does grass-fed Texas beef taste different?
The flavor comes from diverse Texas pastures rather than a monotonous grain diet. The beef is leaner with less intramuscular fat, so it cooks 25-30% faster at lower temperatures. Use a meat thermometer. See our cooking guide.
Is grass-fed beef low in cholesterol?
Grass-fed beef has a healthier fatty acid profile than grain-finished beef, with more omega-3s and a lower omega-6 to omega-3 ratio. It also contains more CLA, a fatty acid associated with cardiovascular and metabolic benefits. Check out our grassfed beef nutrition page.
